Australia runs one of the largest sheep flocks in the world, built on wool and prime lamb. Merino flocks carry the wool side, crossbred and meat-breed ewes supply the lamb market, and meat goats matter too, especially in the drier rangelands.
Most flocks are pasture-based, so rainfall and feed on offer drive joining dates, stocking rates and when lambs are sold. In drought years, supplementary feeding and destocking decisions can make or break the season, and they are far easier with accurate numbers.
